About the site
HA.NotThe.Blog is the Home Automation digital garden side of the “Cloud and Virtualization” blog NotThe.Blog. Across the site you’ll see blog posts, articles, short notes (notelets?) and everything in between about Home Automation. The posts are based upon personal experience and associated learnings from running two connected “Smart Homes” using:
A combination of these Software Components
Running on top of these "Hardware" Components
excuse1
All joined together with a collection of tools like Terraform(OpenTofu), Home Assistant automations (via the GUI or in YAML), CaddyServer for reverse proxying and other things you’ll see mentioned or featured in the pages of the site.
The “Site Explorer” over on the left side of most pages gives you a broad “category” based view of the site. Each post or note can only exist in one place there. Each piece of content is optionally tagged with between “none” and “some” err… 🏷️ Tags. If you want to see other content with the same Tag, you can click on the Tag name at the top of each post/note. You can also see a list of all Tags and their tagged posts on the Tags page here 🏷️.
Digital Gardening 🪴
Digital Garden != Blog, but then again, a Digital Garden is not completely != Blog. If you’re not familiar with the term “digital garden”2, think of the difference between an actual garden3, and a Monet painting of a garden4. The latter is polished and “finished” while the former is in a constant state of change (think some structure, mud, and lots of potential). In the case of this blog/site/garden you’ll find a mixture of Monet-esque “completed” blog-style posts, tiny “notelets” (with potential), and everything in between.
Site Authoring Tools 🛠️
The site is initially written using Obsidian and then rendered into a browser-friendly version using Quartz. The individual pieces of the site are linked together with pop-up/clickable links like this, which show/take you to other places, as well as the “Backlinks” list on each page, which shows you other pages which “link back” that page.

Okay, if we’re being picky, this is “The Parc Monseau” and not just “a garden”, but hopefully you get the point. ↩
